If you have curly and/or kinky hair chances are you have discovered that your hair gets dry very often. Even if you have straight hair, relaxed hair, etc. your hair can still benefit from a hot oil treatment. Hot oil treatments are essential to not only your hair’s health or growth but essential in maintaining a healthy scalp, aiding in dryness, itchiness, and dandruff. It’s also great for maintaining dryness of your hair making it less brittle and prone to breakage, especially if you keep your hair curly most the time. If you have dry, itchy scalp, try doing hot oil treatments on a weekly basis to aid your dry hair and scalp. Hot oil treatments help with this problem. I generally wouldn’t go more than a week without doing a hot oil treatment for me, but if you don’t struggle with dry or itchy scalp you may decide to do them every 2 weeks. The choice is ultimately up to you and your hair’s needs. Here’s a list of a few different DIY hot oil treatments that are easy and accessible to find and use:
For Thicker Hair/Hair Growth.
5-7 tbsp. Coconut Oil and/or Olive oil
1 tbsp. Organic Jamaican Castor Oil
2 tbsp. Jojoba Oil or Almond
10 drops Peppermint Oil
For Dry Hair/Itchy Scalp
5-7 tbsp. Coconut oil
10 drops Peppermint Oil
10 drops Tea Tree Oil
1 tbsp of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar
Start by mixing the ingredients in a small bowl or microwave safe dish. Heat the oil for 10-15 seconds until warm. Add Apple Cider Vinegar (optional). Apply to scalp and hair from root to tip. Massage scalp for a couple minutes. Cover hair with plastic cap for 15-30 minutes. Wash hair with shampoo as normal.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Apple Cider Vinegar helps with maintaining a healthy PH level of your scalp and kills the bacteria and fungus that may cause dandruff, dry/itchy scalp and hair loss. You can use this before you shampoo your hair as directed above, or you can use it after you’ve shampooed and conditioned your hair. This will further help to clarify your hair and scalp removing an excess build up or residue left over. Your hair will not only feel clean but feel your scalp will feel cool, refreshed and healthy. Simply add equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar to a bottle or cup, and pour it over your hair and scalp thoroughly. Rinse with cool water.
